The Frapin family has been established in South West France since 1270, initially as a family of wine-growers. They then became distillers, and have continued in this tradition for 20 generations. The family chose to settle in the Grande Champagne region, Premier Cr de Cognac, establishing their headquarters in the Fontpinot Castle at Segonzac. The Frapin Estate covers 316 hectares in Grande Champagne, and is officially listed as Premier Cru de Cognac À“ of which 240 hectares are planted with the Ugni-Blanc Grape. Cognac comes from a cery precisely mapped viticultural sector which is marked out by law. There are 74,00 hectares divided into Crus or varieties: Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies, Fins Bois, Bons Bois and Bois Ordinaries. They vary on quality and the soil composition. The Frapin Estate has crumbly, chalky soil which is identical to the soil in Reims, hence the appellation, Grande Champagne. Frapin is renowned for its intense, wonderfully balanced and flavoursome cognacs. These are rich, long-lived spirts that display extraordinary complexity of aroma and depth of flavour. Each individual spirit is left to mature to its own optimum condition. The fairly small scale of production also allows the family to hold generous stocks of mature spirits.
