GRAPES: Carignan (100%).

Domaine des Tourelles introduced Carignan to their family of old vines wines in 2018, as the grape variety has existed in the Bekaa Valley for over two centuries and is well-suited to the Lebanese terroir. This move was made in an effort to reconnect with their Mediterranean identity.

Serving: The Domaine des Tourelles Vieilles Vignes Carignan can be served slightly chilled at around 16-18°C (60-65°F) to enhance its fruitiness and freshness. It is recommended to decant the wine for 30 minutes before serving to allow it to fully open up and reveal its complex aromas and flavors.

Pairing: Pairs well with rich poultry dishes like roasted turkey or duck. It also has the structure to complement red meat dishes like lamb or beef. The wine’s high acidity and balanced tannins make it versatile enough to pair with a variety of Mediterranean-inspired dishes, such as grilled vegetables, ratatouille, or pasta dishes with tomato-based sauces. Additionally, the strong notes of liquorice and Mediterranean spices in the wine can pair well with dishes featuring similar flavors, such as grilled eggplant with cumin and coriander or Moroccan-spiced lamb tagine.

Tasting note: On the nose, the Domaine des Tourelles Carignan has dominant flavors of cranberries and raspberries, along with strong notes of liquorice and Mediterranean spices. On the palate, it is high in acidity with balanced tannins, with a rich structure.

Description

The story behind Domaine des Tourelles’ Vieilles Vignes Carignan is that the winery wanted to connect with their Mediterranean identity and heritage by adding a wine made from Carignan grapes to their lineup of old vine wines.

Carignan has been grown in the Bekaa Valley for over two centuries and is known to be well-suited to the Lebanese terroir.
The winery takes a minimalist approach to winemaking, using organic practices without irrigation, and allowing the wine to ferment with indigenous yeasts in concrete vats.

The resulting wine has a high acidity and balanced tannins, with dominant flavors of cranberries and raspberries, along with notes of liquorice and Mediterranean spices. It can be enjoyed reasonably young due to the vinification and aging process in concrete vats.
This wine pairs well with rich poultry, such as turkey or duck, as well as red meat.
