Description

Heritage and Origin
Produced by the Ghantous family for over 130 years, Arak Al Karram is deeply rooted in the traditions of Zahlé, Lebanon’s “City of Wine and Poetry”. It is widely regarded as the first arak brand from the region and maintains a reputation for superior quality by adhering to strict, multi-generational production standards.
Meticulous Production
Ingredients: The process begins with high-quality white grapes grown at altitudes of nearly 1,000 meters in the Bekaa Valley, where winter snow naturally protects the vines.
Distillation: The fermented grape juice undergoes a triple distillation process in traditional copper stills. Anise seeds are added only during the final distillation to infuse the spirit with its signature aromatic oils.
Aging: To achieve its characteristic smoothness, the spirit is matured for three years in traditional clay jars (amphoras), allowing the “angel’s share” to evaporate and the flavors to mellow.
Tasting Experience
Arak Al Karram is clear and colorless in its pure form. On the nose, it presents a “charming” and gentle aroma of licorice that is present without being overpowering. When diluted with water, it undergoes the “louche effect,” transforming into a milky-white emulsion. The palate is characterized by a balance of herbal complexity, a hint of sweetness, and a refreshing, clean finish.
Serving and Pairings
Traditionally served in small glasses with one part arak and two parts water (ice added last), it is the quintessential companion to Lebanese Mezze. Its palate-cleansing properties make it an ideal pairing for spicy barbecued meats, raw liver, beef tartare, and salty Mediterranean cheeses.
